Mapping out what the goal of a service design project works to keep the project on task — working in a manner that is actually affective in accomplishing its goal. The act of designing products and services that work to be more durable and longer lasting plans out an endgame that is meant for commercial adoption.

Currently the gap in the market comes from the strategy that most companies are choosing to adopt — the idea that an increase in the amount that people buy is the best way to increase profit. However, companies are working to change this idea, finding new ways to create profit that isn’t completely dependent on the endless consumption by its consumers.

Even though a nonprofit has not specifically been working to test the solutions currently in place, large companies like Patagonia are working to change the relationships they have in place with their customers, by creating a culture of buying high quality products that can be repaired. The product grows with the user, and their strategy thus far has propelled the company upwards.

Patagonia is setting an example that many other companies can begin to adopt and apply to the manner in which they create and sell their products.
